Guardian Homes

Each of our dogs is considered a member of our family. Each dog is deeply loved and respected.

In order to grow our breeding program and provide each of our breeding dogs with a FOREVER loving family and home environment, we utilize guardian homes.

A guardian home is a great way for a family to have one of our dogs without having the upfront cost of buying a high-quality puppy.

A guardian home is a person/family who agrees to raise and care for a breeder's dog as a loved family pet for the duration of its breeding career (typically 3-4 years.)

Once their breeding career is finished, full ownership will be transferred to the guardian home.

We do have several requirements of our guardian families in place to protect us, The breeder/owner, the dog, and the guardian home.

  • Must live within 90 minutes of Red Deer, Alberta.
  • Must be flexible for dropping off and picking up the dog for health testing, vet visits, breeding, and whelping.
  • Be prepared for a home visit and be able to provide two personal and one employment reference prior to the dog/puppy being placed in your care.
  • Keep the dog safe and contained at all times (fenced-in backyard).
  • Take the dog to the vet for routine vet care Please note - We (the breeder/owner) will pay for health testing and breeding-related vet expenses while the dog is in our program. The guardian is in charge of all routine, pet-related vet expenses, just like you would with any typical pet dog.
  • Provide basic training that is standard for dog ownership (house, leash, and crate training, and basic obedience).
  • Keep the dog clean and groomed on a 6-10 week schedule.
  • Feed our recommended diet.
  • No plans of relocating within the next 5 years.
  • Understand that we are waiving the purchase price of the dog in exchange for a service. You must be willing to communicate, cooperate and coordinate with us during their time in our program, and be dedicated to providing a safe, loving home for the lifetime of the dog.

Where Will the Dog Be Kept?
Do you understand that training (with any breed of puppy) is important and will be given to the puppy when brought home to help the puppy mature into a well-behaved adult? Training takes a lot of time and effort, are you willing to give that to the puppy and/or pay for puppy classes to help them mature and be socialized correctly?
If you have a guardian home female, are you aware that you will be required to relinquish her to us for a period of approx 1 week when she is in heat and 8+ weeks for every litter she has? This could be up to twice a year. Will you and/or your family be emotionally prepared to part with the dog for this length of time? We will do our best to give visitation to the guardian family but do not promise it.
If you have a guardian home male, do you realize that you will be required to relinquish him to us for a period of approximately 3-7 days when the female he needs to breed, is in heat?
Are you prepared to become a part of the RWDOXIES Team by helping us with the health, coat, and color testing of our dogs? We will occasionally need tests done. Some of them will need to be done at specific vet clinics/locations, others can be done at your local veterinary clinic. Others will be sent to you in the mail and you then will be asked to mail them off to the test center. All of these things will be done at the expense of us, the breeder
Are you willing to send us frequent photos, videos, and text updates on the dog and its health, temperament, and coat? We love getting updates on our dogs!
If you have a breeding female, are you prepared to handle her heat cycles? We are here to help when the time comes, but do you have any knowledge of the process? It can be messy sometimes, and we just want you to be aware before committing!

If you have a breeding male, are you aware that he may have issues with humping and/or marking? This does not always happen, but we want potential guardians to be aware of the possibility.
Our guardians are important to us and we appreciate their interest in breeding. However, we want our guardians to be able to trust us to always make the right decision for the dog and its health and well-being.

Guardian Application

In a guardian home arrangement, the guardian family does not initially own the dog.

The dog remains the property of the breeder until the terms of the guardian contract are fulfilled.

Each of our dogs is considered a member of our family and deeply loved. To grow our program and provide each of our breeding dogs with a loving family environment to live in, we utilize guardian homes.

What is a Guardian Home?

A guardian home is a person/family who agrees to raise and care for a breeder’s dog as a loved family pet for the duration of its breeding career.

Do I get to keep the dog?

Once their breeding career is finished. Full ownership will be transferred to the guardian home and a spay/neuter will be completed, at the breeder’s expense. This stipulation also is provided that the home follows the guardian program contract.

How do I qualify for RWDOXIES Guardianship Program?:

  • Your home must not already be home to an intact dog of the opposite sex as the guardian dog.
  • Other than reproductive care, the guardian is responsible for all veterinary care of the guardian dog.
  • You must live within 2 hours and be willing to host a dog for breeding. For example, if you are the guardian of one of my studs, you must be willing to bring the stud to the breeder's home and be flexible for dropping off and picking up the dog for health testing, vet visits, and breeding.
  • Competing in dog shows to gain CKC Championship and/or Grand Championship. This would require the dog to be away from the family for a day, a few days, or a week for travel with the breeder. Depending on the show schedule.Â
